Inaugural Clark Symposium Puts Originalism Under the Microscope

Clark Symposium debaters

Dean Erwin Chemerinsky recently debated the merits of originalism with Vanderbilt Law School Professor and fellow constitutional law expert Brian Fitzpatrick at UC Berkeley Law’s inaugural Thomas David and Judith Swope Clark Symposium on Constitutional Interpretation. Fitzpatrick advocated for originalism, which calls for interpreting the U.S. Constitution in strict alignment with the authors’ intent, while Chemerinsky argued against it. You can watch a video of the debate, which drew a packed live audience and many others who watched online.
