This course provides an in-depth analysis of the judiciary’s role and functions, both within the United States and in international contexts. It covers key topics such as the operation of judicial chambers, judicial processes, the balancing of equities in decision-making, and the importance of globally diverse courts. The course is designed to prepare students for advanced roles in the legal field, with a particular focus on judicial practice and the global evolution of the judiciary. This course will prepare students for federal clerkships. Reading materials will be provided.
Judge Trina L. Thompson is currently serving as a District Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, San Francisco division. Before her nomination to the federal bench in 2022, Judge Thompson served as a Superior Court Judge in the Alameda County Rene C. Davidson Court for nearly twenty years and presided over Felony Jury Trials, Preliminary Hearings, Sentencing, and Motions. Judge Thompson also served as the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court and was thereafter appointed to serve on the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in Washington D.C. When Judge Thompson was sworn in to serve on the state court bench in January of 2003, she became the first African American woman elected to serve in the Alameda County Superior Court.
Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
