Social Justice and the Self explores the relationship between the activist and the cause, between the personal and the political. Specifically, the course investigates the factors that inspire individuals to become invested in specific social justice causes, the difficulties of remaining committed to those causes in the face of shifting political/legal winds, and the financial, psychological, and emotional toll placed on activists as they pursue their broader ends. Throughout the course, we will read the works of activists, movement lawyers, and academics.
A couple of important points for interested students to note:
1. The course is heavily participatory: in addition to a final exam, students will be required to submit weekly writing assignments and complete a group project.
2. The course is centered on the activist (broadly conceived) rather than on any particular cause or movement. As such, the course does not have a substantive focus on race, gender, religion, or any other identity marker.
Interested students should email Professor Rahim - asadrahim@berkeley.edu - a short paragraph of no more than 200 words explaining your interest in the seminar by April 11th. Please make the subject line of your email "Application for Social Justice and the Self." Students will be informed if they have permission to enroll by April 14th. If selected, you will be sent the course control number to enroll.
Attendance at the first class is mandatory for all currently enrolled and waitlisted students; any currently enrolled or waitlisted students who are not present on the first day of class (without prior permission of the instructor) will be dropped. The instructor will continue to take attendance throughout the add/drop period and anyone who moves off the waitlist into the class must continue to attend or have prior permission of the instructor in order not to be dropped.
