This course introduces students to Property Law. It views property as a core legal and social institution whose definition poses fundamental questions about efficiency, fairness, wealth distribution, and the tension between public and private rights. What does it mean to own or transfer property? What rights do non-owners have? How may the government permissibly regulate or take property? In grappling with these questions, the course will introduce students to the black-letter law in a range of doctrinal areas, from adverse possession to servitudes, zoning to landlord-tenant law. Simultaneously, the course will provide opportunities to practice the skill of written legal analysis. Finally, the course also emphasizes the larger dynamics implicated by property law.
