Vijay Sekhon is a partner in Sidley’s San Francisco and Century City offices and a member of the M&A, Private Equity, Capital Markets and Restructuring practice groups. His practice focuses on mergers, purchases, sales and reorganizations of businesses for companies and private equity and hedge funds. Vijay also focuses on public debt and equity offerings, private placements and purchases and sales of debt and equity, and general corporate and securities law, including advising companies and private equity and hedge funds on their disclosure obligations under the federal securities laws.

Vijay is also an adjunct professor at Berkeley Law and served as senior counsel in the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from 2009 to 2011, and an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law from 2014 to 2017. He was a judicial intern for former Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist in the United States Supreme Court and the Honorable Ellen Segal Huvelle in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Vijay has published numerous articles related to law, business and finance in respected academic and practitioner journals, including the Stanford Journal of Law, Business & Finance, the Berkeley Business Law Journal, the Securities Regulation Law Journal, The Real Estate Finance Journal, Pratt’s Journal of Bankruptcy Law and the Review of Banking & Financial Law as well as a book titled Corporate Acquisitions and Mergers in the United States (Wolters Kluwer ed. 2022).
In recognition of his work, Vijay was named as a “Trailblazer” by The American Lawyer. Chambers USA recognized Vijay as an “Up and Coming” lawyer in Private Equity (2020–2022), IFLR1000 named him a Notable Practitioner (2019–2022), and Super Lawyers named Vijay a “Rising Star” (2014–2022). The Century City Bar Association awarded Vijay Transactional Lawyer of the Year (2019) and he also led the 2021 and 2023 M&A Advisor Distressed M&A Deals of the Year as well as the 2019 Turnaround Atlas Private Equity Acquisition of the Year and the 2020 Turnaround Atlas Chapter 11 Restructuring of the Year deals. The Daily Journal selected Vijay as one of the “Top Lawyers Under 40” for 2018. He has been recognized as a “Next Generation Lawyer” for Private Equity Buyouts by The Legal 500 (2017) and a “Rising Star” for Private Equity by Law360 (2017).
Vijay earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School, and received his B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of California at Berkeley.
