Valentina is the clinical supervisor in the Global Rights Innovation Lab Clinic (GRIL). Before joining the clinic, Valentina was a consultant for the Human Rights Data Analysis Group (HRDAG). Previously, Valentina was a Fox International Fellow at Yale University, where she applied supervised machine learning techniques to statistically impute responsibility for killings during the Colombian armed conflict. She has also consulted for ICT Africa, acting as a global reviewer for the Global Index on Responsible AI, and for the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, contributing to a global study on the non-take-up of rights. Additionally, she worked as a researcher at the University of Essex, examining the relationship between transitional justice and economic development.
As Analytics Lead at Colombia’s Truth Commission, Valentina led a multidisciplinary team of nearly 30 researchers, overseeing the production of quantitative evidence and the development of the Commission’s data portal, geoportal, and dashboards. Among other projects, her team, HRDAG and the Special Jurisdiction for Peace worked with over 100 datasets to estimate the universe of victims of killings, kidnappings, enforced disappearances, child recruitment and forced displacement.
At the Center for the Study of Law, Justice, and Society (Dejusticia), Valentina was the first economist to join the litigation team, where she was responsible for the quantitative evidence and co-led the strategies on access to healthcare, immigrant rights and climate change.
