Joel is a retired partner of the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where at various times he served as the Partner-in-Charge of the firm’s Bay Area offices and as a member of the firm’s Executive, Compensation, Finance, Hiring, and Ethics Committees. His practice focused primarily on antitrust. In addition to antitrust litigation, he handled merger and cartel investigations involving the antitrust/competition authorities of Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, various European nations, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, and other jurisdictions. Earlier in his career he was a Trial Attorney with the Antitrust Division of U.S. Department of Justice. In addition to lecturing on international antitrust at Berkeley Law, Joel serves on the boards of the Sierra Club Foundation and the Berkeley Center for Law and Business.
