For more than a decade, Asaf has worked to advance the rights of the little “t” in LGBT. As a Senior Staff Attorney and Director of Transgender Youth Project at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Asaf safeguards the rights of transgender and gender-expansive youth to be affirmed and supported for who they are through litigation, public policy, and advocacy. He has represented transgender youth and their families in a wide range of legal matters including discrimination in schools, child custody disputes, child abuse and neglect proceedings, and access to medical and mental health care for gender dysphoria. Asaf has also filed numerous amicus briefs in cases involving transgender youth and authored many resources on issues affecting transgender youth.
In February 2023, Asaf will leave NCLR to join the California Civil Rights Department, the largest state civil rights agency in the country, and help advance the agency’s mission of protecting the people of California from unlawful discrimination, hate violence, and human trafficking.
After graduating magna cum laude from Rutgers School of Law in Newark in 2008, Asaf clerked for The Honorable Virginia A. Long on the Supreme Court of New Jersey.
