University Housing

Although most graduate students choose to live in off-campus rental housing, there are several options in the category of university and alternative housing near campus. University-run housing includes International House, the Unit 2 Residence Halls & Wada Apartments, Channing-Bowditch Apartments, and Martinez Commons. These host a mixture of undergraduate, graduate, and visiting students.  Summer sublets may also be available for students with families in the University Family Student Housing.

If you would like to live in University housing, we recommend that you apply immediately! University summer housing typically fills up in April.

**PLEASE NOTE – Ida Louise Jackson Graduate House and Manville Apartments are listed on the above site but they are not available for summer-only rentals.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

NOTE: 2016 summer rental dates for the International House are from May 22 to August 12. If you wish to live in I-House, you may request an early arrival but if that is not possible, you must be prepared to take interim housing between May 18 and 22.

Located just steps from Boalt Hall, International House (I-House) was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan and overlooks the San Francisco Bay from the top of Bancroft Way. Summer residents are a diverse group including graduate students, teachers, laboratory researchers, Elderhostelers, visiting scholars, and exchange students from around the world.

Room and Board rates include 19 meals per week (three meals each weekday, two meals on Saturdays and Sundays, and one meal on holidays). Restrooms and showers are shared on the hall. Floors are co-ed, but restrooms and showers are single sex. Rooms are completely furnished with a phone, beds, dressers, desks, desk lamps and chairs. Single room rates for summer range from approximately $3,900 – $5,900 for the entire term, including a meal plan.

BERKELEY STUDENT COOPERATIVE

The Berkeley Student Cooperative is a student-owned and -operated system of 17 rooming houses and three apartment complexes near campus. Students contribute a weekly work shift to keep the cost of the housing extremely low. Two facilities, Hillegass Parker House and the Convent, are set aside for graduate and reentry students. Since many academic-year residents leave for the summer, there are generally many rooms available at this time.

During the summer, all houses except two are co-ed. Rents range from around $1,600 to $2,200 for the entire summer. Some houses offer an optional food service; in others, the house kitchens are available for students to use at all times.

There are many other hotels and motels in the Berkeley area, particularly on University Avenue. You will find a list of hotels and motels on the Cal Rentals website and in the Visiting section of this website. If you expect an assignment to university-operated housing, you may need to rent a place until your assignment is ready. Cal Rentals recommends that your off-campus rental be a month-to-month agreement, which allows you to move out with 30 days written notice to the landlord. Approximately half the rentals listed with Cal Rentals are month-to-month or offer negotiable tenancies.
