Symposium on Discretion in the Legal System

The Berkeley Criminal Law & Justice Center; Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law; the Institute for Innovation in Prosecution at John Jay College; the Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics at Hofstra Law; and the ABA Criminal Justice Prosecutorial Independence Taskforce invite you to join us for a symposium on the role of discretion in the legal system, with a focus on prosecutorial and judicial discretion.
The symposium will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Berkeley Law School. Space is limited but there will be a Zoom option for those who cannot attend in person. CLE credit will be granted.
Topics include discretion in charging decisions, judicial and prosecutorial discretion in sentencing, discretion in immigration-considerations, and the political weaponization of prosecutorial discretion. Our keynote speaker will be Cook County (IL) State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, and other featured speakers include Berkeley Law School Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, Harvard Law School Professor Alexandra Natapoff, Federal Public Defender for the Northern District of California Jodi Linker, Dekalb County (GA) District Attorney Sherry Boston, among others.
These events are open only to UC Berkeley Law students, faculty, and staff, unless otherwise noted.
