Resistance Law at East Bay Community Law Center

Join the East Bay Community Law Center for an open seminar discussion on protests, racial justice, and community lawyering. 

We are opening our weekly seminar (the companion class to our clinics) to all interested students and members of the law school community. We will be discussing the history and current reality of legalized oppression. We will hear from 3 guest speakers on the creative strategies they use to resist and upend unfair laws. 

  • Gabriela M. Lopez is an Oakland based immigration and criminal defense attorney who practices deportation defense for immigrants with criminal histories and criminal defense for immigrants and activist 
  • Rebecca Hall J.D., Ph.D. is an independent scholar, activist, and educator. She writes and publishes on the history of race, gender, law, and resistance as well as articles on climate justice and intersectional feminist theory. Her most recent book, Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts (Simon & Schuster, 2021) has won multiple awards, and was a finalist for the N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards and the Pen America Open Book Award. Wake has been listed as a Best Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post, Forbes, and Ms. Magazine. Dr. Hall was the first housing attorney at the East Bay Community Law Center. 
  • Brigitte Nicoletti is an attorney at the East Bay Community Law Center where she focuses on addressing the numerous social and economic harms associated with mass incarceration. 
  • Discussion moderated by Zoe Polk, Executive Director of EBCLC.

Marcus Books will also be onsite, selling copies of Dr. Hall’s book, Wake.
