Former UC Berkeley chancellor and Berkeley Law professor Ira Michael Heyman, a champion of civil rights and an expert in land planning and city government, died Nov. 19 at age 81.
As chancellor, Heyman spearheaded a major increase in the number of undergraduate students of color and a more than three-fold expansion in giving by private donors. Last year, to honor Heyman’s record of service to the university, the Bay Area, and the nation, Berkeley Law established a faculty chair in his honor and renamed its new west patio the I. Michael Heyman Terrace. Read more about Heyman’s life here.
