During the holiday season, employers often ask the CDO to forward event announcements to first-year students.
These types of events are wonderful opportunities to visit law firms, meet associates and partners, and find out about the firm’s philosophy, culture and practice areas. The CDO encourages you to take advantage of these opportunities when possible.
If you are uncertain why you would go to an event hosted by an employer, or what to do when you get there, here are some resources you might find helpful.
* The CDO library has a copy of How to Work A Room, by Susan RoAne, as well as several other books with sections containing advice on networking. Other books on networking, such as The Art of Mingling (by Jeanne Martinet) and How to Talk to Anyone (by Leil Lowndes) are available at bookstores and online.
* Here is a link to networking advice from the American Society of International Law: http://www.asil.org/essayvikram.cfm
* Here is general networking advice from About.com: http://internships.about.com/od/networking/ht/Networking.htm
* Finally, you may wish to listen to the Networking Presentation that the CDO put on in the spring — we link to it and other networking resources on our networking webpage.
