Biography: Emma Day is a Fulbright Scholar and an LL.M. student at UC Berkeley, and is writing a thesis on the intersection between children’s rights to protection and privacy online. Her thesis will also look at the potential for corporate accountability in relation to violations of children’s rights around the world by American technology companies.
Prior to coming to UC Berkeley Emma was leading the UNICEF East Asia & Pacific Office regional work on child online protection, which involved designing several research projects and convening a series of workshops involving governments and the private sector in Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Mongolia, and Myanmar to address children’s rights online.
Emma also co-founded a non-profit in 2015, Child Redress International, which aims to promote access to remedies for child victims of sexual exploitation in transnational cases.
Emma was called to the Bar in British Colombia, Canada in 2010. She has been working on a range of human rights issues for her entire career ranging among children’s rights, women’s rights, the right to health, access to information and asylum and refugee rights. She has spent five years living and working in Africa (Rwanda and Kenya) and six years in Southeast Asia (Thailand and Indonesia).
